Leaks and moisture damage are almost never caused by a single factor. For example, an improperly installed roof may have over-driven nails which don't cause any problems until the roof starts to age. Once the roof starts to get old the holes from the over-driven nails will start to leak and wind will start to blow the shingles off. A roof that was installed properly may have another five years left while the same roof with the over-driven nails might need immediate replacement.
